Clinical Study Shows Omega 3 Helps Fight Depression

A clinical study published in June has shown that through the use of the well known supplement, Omega 3, patients suffering from deep depression or anxiety disorders showed clear signs of improvement.

From 2005 to 2009, over 400 participants took part in the study which was the most comprehensive study ever to be carried out on Omega 3. Initial results did not present any clear benefits but over long periods of time, Omega 3 has been proven to help people with bipolar depression among many other clinical disorders.

Of the 400 participants who took part in the extensive study, only half were actually given Omega 3. Unbeknown to all participants, half of the capsules that were identical in appearance consisted of sunflower oil and only traces of fish oil with the other half being filled with the Omega 3 supplement.

Depression in Canada alone actually affects a large amount of the population with 11% of men and 16% of women being affected at least once in their lives.

The problem that many sufferers have is that symptoms are often extremely complex and difficult to treat. Many sufferers are also worried about the side-effects of modern medicines; often choosing alternative medicines that have not yet undergone rigorous research before the effectiveness of the alternative remedies have been properly assessed.

With many sufferers now following the trend of alternative remedies, it extremely important that research be carried out as Omega is frequently the first choice when it comes to alternative anti-depressant remedies.

Perhaps one of the main reasons behind the study is that depression is currently the world’s fourth biggest killer with suicides unfortunately on the rise. It has been predicted that by the year 2020, this will shift position and become the world’s second biggest cause behind death in men and women around the world.

Studies have shown that the fatty acids present in Omega 3 show clear benefits towards sufferers of depression and anxiety disorders. Many sufferers who do not respond to modern medicine have also shown clear signs of improvement.

This really is a discovery that will change the lives of many. With depression on the rise and many people being unreceptive to traditional medicines, sufferers now have another alternative to aid them in their treatment and recovery. The focal point for many debates over the last ten years has been the effectiveness of omega 3 and people with depression. Today, through the most extensive research ever carried out on the supplement and sufferers, results have proven to the world that the benefits of Omega 3 are simply undeniable.
